Tax and NI rates in Northern Ireland for 2026/27
Income tax isn't devolved to Stormont, so pay in Belfast or Derry is taxed exactly as it would be in Manchester. The personal allowance is £12,570, and it has been frozen at that level until April 2031.
| On salary between | Income tax | National Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| £0 and £12,570 | 0% | 0% |
| £12,571 and £50,270 | 20% | 8% |
| £50,271 and £125,140 | 40% | 2% |
| Over £125,140 | 45% | 2% |
Between £100,000 and £125,140 the personal allowance is withdrawn, so the real rate on that slice is higher than 40%.
How this is calculated
A net pay or salary sacrifice pension comes off your pay before tax. With relief at source you pay 80% of the contribution from your take-home pay and the pension provider claims the other 20% from HMRC, so that is how it appears here. National Insurance is charged on gross pay, except that salary sacrifice reduces the pay it's charged on. Student loans take 6% of pay over the plan threshold: £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4 and £25,000 for Plan 5.
Worked example: £28,000 with a Plan 1 loan
Ciarán works in Belfast on £28,000, pays 5% into a net pay pension and has a Plan 1 loan.
- Pension: £1,400, leaving £26,600 to tax
- Income tax: (£26,600 − £12,570) at 20% = £2,806
- National Insurance: (£28,000 − £12,570) at 8% = £1,234.40
- Student loan: (£28,000 − £26,900) at 6% = £66
Take-home pay is £22,493.60 a year, about £1,874 a month.
Questions people ask
Is income tax different in Northern Ireland?
No. Northern Ireland uses the same income tax rates as England and Wales: 20% basic rate on taxable income up to £37,700 (£50,270 of salary with the standard allowance), 40% higher rate up to £125,140 and 45% above that.
Which student loan plan do Northern Ireland graduates repay?
Most people who studied from Northern Ireland are on Plan 1, which is repaid at 6% of income over £26,900 in 2026/27. If you took out an English loan after 2012 you are probably on Plan 2. Your plan is shown in your Student Loans Company online account.
How much is £30,000 after tax in Northern Ireland?
With no pension or student loan, £30,000 leaves about £25,119.60 a year, or £2,093 a month, after £3,486 income tax and £1,394.40 National Insurance.
Do I pay rates instead of council tax in Northern Ireland?
Yes. Northern Ireland has domestic rates, based on the capital value of your home, instead of council tax. Rates are not taken from your pay, so they are not in this calculator.
Why does my payslip differ slightly from this calculator?
Payroll works out tax and NI for each pay period and rounds as it goes, while this calculator works on the whole year. Overtime, bonuses and a tax code other than 1257L will also change the figures.
